This small and practical Chinese desk table would work brilliantly in a home office, hallway or small room. Black lacquer was commonly used in Shanxi province as to this day it is a prominent coal mining province. The coal was mixed with lacquer to produce this black lacquer. The table top lacquer has worn away from considerable use over the last 140 years and a beautiful patina has developed across the top of the desk from continual use. The table is constructed from northern Chinese elm wood (yumu 榆木).
This style of kneehole desk may well have been an influence by Western traders. It has three drawers making it more functional than much traditional Chinese antique furniture. The drawer interiors have been replaced during its lifetime but the brass hardware is original.
